Advancing Referral Processes: Helping Women and Youth Reach Employment
ACTEW, in partnership with the Ontario Association of Youth Employment Centres, is pleased to present our latest study: Advancing Referral Processes. Employment practitioners working in agencies serving women and youth across Ontario provided their perspective on effective referral practices as well as barriers to employment. Funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities’ Employment Ontario Network Development Fund, this study broadens our understanding of current referral processes in both rural and urban settings, and explores opportunities to improve referral processes at agency and network-wide levels. The research was conducted by Evidence Community Based Research.

Temporary Help Consultation
The Ministry of Labour undertook a community consultation on Work through Temporary Help Agencies. With one third of Ontario workers engaged in temporary work, many of them women, the consultation is a timely and important event. ACTEW believes temporary work can be a positive form of employment but only when it is used to transition people into permanent employment.

The Canadian Immigrant Labour Market in 2007: Gender is an important factor
In a recent study published by Stats Canada it was found that gender was an important factor in the 2007 participation and employment rates of very recent immigrants. The Women's Program of the Centre for Spanish Speaking Peoples was the community partner in this research project. Fourteen women were interviewed to understand their experiences, their legal education and information needs and their learning strategies. The data collected from the interviews formed the framework for the workshop. A number of these solutions are currently being developed and implemented by the women participants working in partnership with other community organizations.
