ACTEW Members Meeting on September 24

Sarnia Event Puts Women in the Picture

Free Workshops on Technology Partnership Development

Based on our experience with The Constellation -- the network of non-profit organizations that share online resources on jobs, news, events and resources -- ACTEW's regional trainers will deliver workshops across Ontario. Advisors Sought for Training Employment Sector on Partner Abuse Issues

Employment practitioners with expertise serving survivors of partner abuse are invited to join the Advisory Committee of ACTEW's newest project, Supporting Survivors, Supporting Employment. In this initiative, ACTEW and Springtide Resources will collaborate to develop and deliver a series of professional development workshops for front-line career development practitioners. Student Staffers Support ACTEW

For the next eight months Menka Mery Doneski will join ACTEW on a student placement. Menka attends York University, where she is studying Labour and Women's studies. She has a keen interest in issues related to violence against women and immigrant women's employment. Danielle Olsen, who worked as the Strategic Coordination Assistant as the ACTEW summer student, is staying on board with ACTEW supporting The Constellation.

Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration - Bridge Training for Internationally Trained Individuals Invitation for Proposals

The Ontario Government has released an Invitation for Proposals to not-for-profit corporations interested in receiving funding for projects designed to improve access to certification/registration and employment for internationally trained individuals seeking employment at a level commensurate with their skills and experience. Submission Deadline: October 25, 2007, 12 Noon.

Toronto Community Housing - Hire Youth Campaign

A recently launched Toronto Community Housing campaign is calling on employers to look at the talent of prospective youth hires, and not at their home addresses. Local youth currently living in social housing joined politicians and business owners at the York Civic Centre to kick off the Hire Youth Campaign, highlighting the barriers they face when applying for jobs. The new TCH campaign, funded by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, is targeting 17 to 25 year olds in Toronto Community Housing neighbourhoods who are out of school and unemployed.

Employment Matters: Towards an Integrated Employment and Training System

Participants will learn about Ontario's new labour market delivery model, effective labour market adjustment services, and innovative client referral strategies. This event takes place on September 26-27 in Kitchener and is co-hosted by ONESTEP and CAECO.

YWCA Life Skills Ontario Training Tour (Sept/07- March/08)

YWCA Life Skills is currently holding an Ontario Training Tour to facilitate its own train-the-trainer mentoring program to ensure the highest training standards from Life Skills Coach trainers. The training, coaching and publications applies an experiential approach to learning, rooted in the principles and philosophy of the Saskatchewan NewStart model of adult education.

Self-employment is one of the fastest growing areas of employment for women and women entrepreneurs are particularly influential in the small business economy. ACTEW's newest fact sheet in the series on women's employment issues provides statistics, facts and resources on self-employment and its role in women's economic security and success.  Learn how labour market development policies relate to self-employment in our September issue of InFocus, ACTEW's policy e-bulletin. The guide was funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (Government of Ontario) and was written by Vicki Trottier and Jette Cosburn.

Advancing the Inclusion of People with Disabilities

A new report published by HRSDC provides an overview of key initiatives that different federal departments and agencies have implemented, individually or in collaboration, or are in the course of implementing in 2005-06 and beyond. The information is divided into: accessibility and disability supports, health and well-being, skills and learning, employment and income.
